The United States of America has one of the biggest immigration percentages in the world as literally millions apply to get a visa every year; indeed, the USA accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all of the other countries in the world combined. However, just as so many are deemed eligible for admission there are a large amount that are not and many try and go through the Green Card Lottery as a result.
This is essentially a lottery that allows residents from countries that are deemed to have a low percentage of immigrants accepted into the United States to qualify for permanent residency. Indeed, the eligible country lists ranges from the likes of Nigeria and Venezuela and even to Uzbekistan and Fiji and spreads across six continents. However, how do you qualify to be entered into this lottery?
Legally speaking you have to meet two sets of criteria before you can apply for a green card through this lottery. First of all you need to be from an eligible country and the rules behind what is an eligible country and what is not changes quite regularly so you may find that your country has just been removed from the list or it might have even just been added to the list. You also have to meet the work and experience criteria that the lottery sets; this means that you will be able prove that you have completed high school and have the equivilant of a high school diploma or have worked in a set list of occupations. Indeed, these two criteria’s are set because the lottery is designed to give people a chance from countries that have a low rate of immigration to the United States but can aid the economy and benefit the economy as well.
